Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)

SPACE is a treatment program developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz that aims to treat children and adolescents with anxiety disorders such as separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, fears and phobias, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Parents and caregivers are the participants in sessions to learn skills and tools to help their child overcome their anxiety or OCD, and treatment focuses on changes that parents can make in their own behavior to increase supportive responses and reducing accommodation behaviors. It is particularly helpful for children who are unable to engage in traditional treatments, like ERP, and is a great and effective option for families who have tried other treatments without success. Clinical trials support that SPACE can be as effective as working directly with the child in therapy, and is a short-term treatment.
